Celebrating Carers Week

Running from Sunday 16 to Saturday 22 October 2022, National Carers Week is a time to recognise and celebrate the 2.65 million Australians who provide care and support to a family member or friend.

To support and honour the hardworking unpaid carers of Victoria, Merri Health is launching an exciting new Podcast ‘The Care Mosaic’, a new magazine The Caring Way and hosting a range of carer events during Carers Week.

The Caring Way

The Caring Way, a new magazine from our Carer Gateway team, aims to build community awareness through the experiences of carers themselves.

In The Caring Way, carers can read about other carers and their stories, supports that have helped others, how to navigate carer services and more.

The Care Mosaic

A new podcast series showcasing the different experiences of carers across Victoria has been produced by our Carer Gateway team.

The Care Mosaic explores the challenges unpaid carers face on a daily basis.

Some of the carers we meet include Fatima, an Afghan refugee caring for her grandfather and younger brother, and Wendy, a carer experiencing first-hand the impacts of caring for someone with a mental illness.

Each episode looks at a particular type of caring relationship, including young carers, carers supporting their ageing parents and carers who are partners - focusing on the nature of caring and how it features within other aspects of their life.

The stories also touch on the support carers have received, including counselling, group support, coaching, respite and skills courses.

Launching Carers Week; A Carers Day Out!

To launch Carers Week 2022, Merri Health joined The Hon. Tim Bull, Shadow Minister for Disability, Seniors and Carers, and 550 carers as Principle Sponsor of Carers Victoria’s Luna Park event on Sunday 16 October.

We tended a stall and chatted to Victoria’s unpaid carers about the supports that Carer Gateway can provide.

The day was filled with fun, laughter and a much-needed break for our unpaid carers.

Showcasing Carer Gateway during Carers Week

To promote our fantastic service, we have had Carer Gateway banners put up in Bourke Street Mall for the duration of Carers Week!

We are also running an advertisement on Gold 104 FM – keep an ear out!

Merri Health is also hosting a number of events and activities for carers across the week including a wellbeing workshop and lunch and trivia night, where these everyday heroes can celebrate, laugh, connect and relax.
