We launch free after school sports for girls

after school program

Published July 15 2025

Holstep Health has kicked off Opening the School Gate, a free after-school program helping local girls get active by removing barriers to participation. Starting in Term 2 on-site at Glenroy West and St Matthew’s Primary Schools, female students chose their preferred sport and schedule—boosting engagement from day one.

At Glenroy West Primary School, 17 girls joined a basketball program led by Helping Hoops and Coburg Basketball Association, with equipment support from Basketball Victoria. Early survey results show:

  • 94% feel more confident playing basketball
  • 82% are more motivated to be active
  • Highlights: making friends, playing sport, and sharing snacks
  • Average attendance: 16 girls/session

At St Matthew’s Primary School (Fawkner), 26 girls on average are taking part in Miniroos Soccer, delivered in partnership with Football Victoria and attracting students from nearby Moomba Park Primary School.

What’s next? Lacrosse starts at Fawkner Primary School in Term 3! Stay tuned for more results...
