About the role
Mind to Make Men's Group Community Mental Health Volunteer
Applying the mind to think creatively and allowing the space to practice the art of craftsmanship has shown to have profound benefits on one's mental health and wellbeing.
The "Mind to Make" Merri Health group is for people who are interested in being a part of a group which focuses on socializing, teaching, sharing ideas, skills and expertise with each other in a creative environment. Each session explores different aspects of crafts and activities could include sewing, knitting, stitching, quilting, candle making, screen printing and terrariums etc.
This role will give you the opportunity to share, learn and embrace your arts and crafts interests and passions. You will be working along side the group facilitator to deliver support and guidance to participants from various backgrounds.
The group is structured and operates weekly adhering to an organized calender of different craft activities.
The clientele you'll be working with consist of people with a mental illness or a dual diagnosis. You will learn how to structure and co-facilitate a mental health psychosocial group within the community. It will develop your understanding of mental illness and how to approach and build rapport with people from various backgrounds and disabilities in a group setting. You will also be given the opportunity to learn and teach participants a variety of crafts and develop skills experimenting with different materials and resources.

Mind to Make Men's Group runs every Wednesday from 11am - 1pm and a typical term is 11 weeks. Each group will have between 8 - 16 participants and your role as a Mind to Make Community Mental Health Volunteer is to assist the group facilitator in all aspects of the group activities.
You will be responsible for:
Assisting group facilitator with group preparation and packing up.
Assisting facilitator in organization of the group
Delivering support and guidance for participants
Initiating socialization and motivating participants to engage in the activities
Providing knowledge and understanding for a variety of arts and crafts
Share passion and excitement about Arts and Crafts and its therapeutic properties.
To be successful:
- Passion and excitement for all kinds of Arts and Crafts.
- Experience and knowledge in various crafting activities
- Understanding and compassion for people with a range of mental illness and intellectual capacities
- Energetic, bubbly, approachable and responsible attitude.
- 2-3 hours every Wednesday
- Commencing 17th October to December 19th 2018
- 12 month commitment
Successful applicants will be required to have a current National Police Check, a Working With Children Check, Disability Workers Exclusion Scheme Check and full Drivers Licence. All candidates must have the right to work in Australia. Working with Children Checks are free for Volunteers, and Merri Health provide instructions for obtaining a police check clearance and we also cover the cost for volunteers who require one.
We also provide training at no cost to our volunteers on food handling, manual handling and more if you would like to be involved and gain as much as you can from this rewarding experience!
