Merri Health supports a number of edible gardens in  residential services for people with disabilities and mental health issues and currently has 2 vacancies for volunteer gardeners.

Merri Health supports a number of edible gardens in  residential services for people with disabilities and mental health issues and currently has 2 vacancies for volunteer gardeners.

Volunteer gardeners assist the SRS Gardening Worker with general gardening tasks and interact with the residents taking part in the weekly gardening sessions.

In this role, you will be meeting wonderful people and will have access to interesting and stimulating free training opportunities.

You will be responsible for:

  • Assisting the lead SRS Gardening Worker

  • Facilitating resident involvement with the Gardening Sessions

  • Helping to maintain  the garden through general gardening tasks such as weeding, watering and pruning

  • Using initiative to encourage the participation of residents

  • Attending all rostered gardening group sessions (2-3 hours per week on weekdays, during business hours)

To be successful:

  • Ability to bend and kneel comfortably for gardening work
  • Overall general fitness
  • Good communication skills
  • Basic knowledge of gardening/horticulture
  • Punctual and reliable
  • Capacity to work as part of a team
  • Ability to take directions from staff
  • Adhere to occupational health & safety practices

Time commitment: 2-3 hours per week. The gardening sessions take place on Monday and Tuesday during business hours. Location: Brunswick or Reservoir

Successful applicants will be required to have a current National Police Check and, if relevant to the position, a Working With Children Check and full Drivers Licence. All candidates must have the right to work in Australia. Working with Children Checks are free for Volunteers, and Merri Health provide instructions for obtaining a police check clearance and we also cover the cost for volunteers who require one.

We also provide training at no cost to our volunteers on food handling, manual handling and more if you would like to be involved and gain as much as you can from this rewarding experience!
